JEAN BAKER HOLLAND
Athens- Jean Baker Holland, a longtime resident of Athens, died on December 28, 2013, after a long and courageous fight with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Judge Jack Holland, a son, Joseph Holland and his finance, Chalisa Madsen, Athens, brother, James E. Baker and his wife, Patricia, Mobile, Alabama, various nieces and nephews who reside in Phoenix, Highland Village, Garland, Tyler, Rowlett and Florida.
Preceding her in death is her sister, Peggy Alice Hatcher, brother, Thomas Baker, Jr., her parents, Tom and Ethyl Baker.
Jean’s father owned and operated a Tailor Shop and Cleaners on the North side of the Courthouse square for many years. Her grandfather, Joel Baker, was Sheriff of Henderson County in the 1930’s.
Jean attended Athens Public Schools, was very popular and a cheerleader at Athens High School. After graduation in 1948, she attended Abilene Christian College and later married Jack Holland. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. She worked during the early years of marriage and helped put her husband through law school at the University of Texas in Austin.
Jean was a member of the Church of Christ during her youth but later attended the United Methodist Church with her husband, where they were members of the Builders Class. She was a member of the Athens Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Athens Listeners Club and the Athens Literary Club. She was also a supporter of the Henderson County Historical Society, Athens Cemetery Association and belonged to the Decorative Arts Society in Dallas.
Jean was an accomplished ballroom dancer and she and her husband belonged to several dance clubs in Dallas, including Coterie, Rondo, Carrousel, Kermis, Trippers, Thalia, The Dallas Dinner Dance Club and similar dance clubs in Tyler. They also belonged to the 21 Club in Athens. On occasion, Jean was a model at various functions in Dallas.
A memorial services is scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Thursday January 2, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church, Athens, under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home, with Rev. Becky Love Pastor of First United Methodist Church, Athens, and (Jean’s cousin) Jane Lawrence, Pastor of the Union United Methodist Church in Fall River Mass.
A private graveside service was held at Athens Cemetery prior to the memorial service.
Pallbearers will be Keith Baker, Brian Baker, Geoff Baker, Nick Nicholas, Judge Dan Moore, and Judge Carter Tarrance.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, January 2, 2014 from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM
