Obituary:

Mr. Leonard D. Smith, age 92, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at Thornton Terrace in Hanover. He was born March 11, 1915 in Jefferson County, Indiana, the son of John G. and Claudia Dismore Smith.

He graduated in 1933 from the former North Madison High School and worked for 27 ? years as a truck driver for the former Barber Grocery Company. He also worked in the maintenance area at Pope John Elementary and Shawe High Schools. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Air Force for nine years and leaving the service as a staff sergeant.

Mr. Smith was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Jefferson Post #9, American Legion, the Antique Car Club of Madison, and enjoyed woodworking, hunting and fishing. He was also a musician, having played the fiddle, banjo and guitar.

Survivors include two daughters: Susan K. Heritage and her husband, Ken, of Deputy, Indiana, and Kathy L. Braun and her husband, Joe, of Lancaster, Indiana; four sons: Michael S. Smith of Madison, David Smith and his wife, Emily, of Vevay, Indiana, and Wayne R. Smith of Madison; six grandchildren: Jacklyn Barrett, Lisa Geyman and her husband, Travis, Melissa Smith, Aram Smith, Michelle Anderson White and her husband, James, and Michael Smith; six great grandchildren: Amanda , Heather and Shelby Barrett, Ricky Anderson, Tiana K. Geyman, and Liana Geyman who is due to be born later this month; several step-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Betty Stackhouse; and his faithful companion, Sassy.

He was preceded in death by his father, John G. Smith; his mother: Claudia Dismore Eades Marshall; his wife, Kathryn Wentworth Smith on January 1, 1995, and to whom he was married on January 24, 1942 at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Madison; his step-fathers: Ernest Eases and Clarence Marshall; two sons: Kenneth and John Aldred "Jack" Smith, and one brother, Wayne Smith.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Reverend John Meyer at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 17, 2007 at Saint Patrick's Catholic Chapel, with interment to follow in Saint Patrick's Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6:30 to 9:00 PM Friday, March 16 and from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM Saturday at the Lytle Funeral Chapel. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.

The family requests contributions be made to the Friends of Shawe and Pope John. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
