Obituary:

John Hendel, 89, of Lincoln Park, passed away March 9, 2013 surrounded by his loving family.

He was the husband of Caroline Ann (Leach) Hendel whom he married 61 years ago on October 27, 1951.

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Raymond H. and Irene Lydia (Graeber) Hendel.

John was a 1942 graduate of Milton Hershey Boys School and attended Drexel University.

Sgt John Hendel was a U.S. Army veteran, working as a radio inspector and maintenance technician, repairing aircraft radios and communications systems. He served in the 374th Air Service Squadron on Biak Island in New Guinea starting in September 1944 where he received a good conduct Medal.

He was a trouble analyzer for Bell Telephone Company for 36 years, retiring in 1983. John enjoyed traveling in his retirement having taken many travel trailer road trips with his wife visiting most of the United States. The annual "boys camping trip" with his sons and grandsons enriched his close bonds with his family as well as “boys night out” at the Reading Liedercranz. He liked to tinker in his workshop and spent many hours on woodworking projects that inspired all of his sons to do the same. He had a green thumb and loved his garden, especially his tomatoes and his red beets, spending many hours tending to them. Most of all, he enjoyed birthday and holiday dinners with his family where good times and laughter were served. “Gentleman John” had a kind and gentle nature along with a sense of humor that endeared him to anyone he knew.

He was an active member of St. John Baptist de la Salle R.C.Church, Shillington.

In addition to his wife Carol, he is survived by their five sons: John R., husband of Elizabeth (Breneiser) Hendel, Reading; Raymond S. Hendel, Gibraltar; David C., husband of Betty (Kast) Hendel, Breinigsville; Timothy S. Hendel, Reading and James F., husband of Michelle (McKee) Hendel, Souderton. Four grandchildren: Lauren E. Hendel, Johanna M. Hendel, Michael S. Hendel and Samuel H. Hendel also survive as do many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his sisters: Dorothy Gantz and Nancy Bare, both of Reading, and he was predeceased by his sister, Katherine Stoudt and brother, Richard Hendel.

The family would like to thank Reading Hospital Acute Care, St. Joseph Hospital Emergency and Nursing staff, Manor Care SS, Heartland Hospice, Assured Assistance, and especially Joyce Flannery and Dr. Kim Rauenzahn for their care and compassion in treating John like a member of their own family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in St. John Baptist de la Salle, Shillington. A viewing will be 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, John's family would like you to make a donation to the charity of your choice in John's memory. Online condolences may be recorded at www.kuhnfuneralhome.com.
