Shirley Davenport, 76, of North Charleston, SC passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2013. Born in Pitt County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Wayland Earl Stallings and Goldie Ruenell Stallings and widow to Leslie Heber Davenport.
Mrs. Davenport and her husband lived along the east coast before settling in Charleston. She taught at Ferndale Baptist, Northside Christian School and volunteered teaching Adult Literacy. Mrs. Davenport was a member of Northside Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School. She loved reading and watching murder mysteries. Shirley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, who taught her family to balance a career and family together.
She is survived by her children, Deborah Pearce of Frederick, MD, William Davenport of North Charleston and Jeffrey Davenport and his spouse Troy Horrisberger of Washington, DC; three sisters, Nellie Glisson of Greenville, NC, Peggy Bell and Barbara Gurganus both of Tarboro, NC. Mrs. Davenport is also survived by nine grandchildren, Rhiannon, Katie, Becky, Albert, Bryce, Les, Conner, Hannah and Alex and sixteen great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Sunday, May 26, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, GOOSE CREEK CHAPEL, 869 St. James Avenue. The family will receive friends prior, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens, North Charleston.
