Mr. Ernest Glen “Ernie” Davenport, age 69, a well-known resident of the Black Hollow Community, passed away Friday, May 17, 2013, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was born December 6, 1943, in Washington County, Virginia, a son of the late Claude and Doris Mays Davenport. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served his country during the Vietnam Conflict. He also worked for the Town of Abingdon as a police officer and as a Deputy for the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. He worked for many years for Clinchfield Coal Company and most recently worked for Food Country as a security officer. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed trapping, hunting, and fishing. He was also a member of the VFW.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Roy, and Sam; and three sisters, Gay, Ruby, and Wanda.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Laura Eastridge Davenport of Abingdon; one son, Master Sergeant Michael Davenport and wife Renee of Richmond, Kentucky; one daughter, Jennifer Maness and husband Michael of Kingsport, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Makenzie Campbell, Creed Maness, and Liam Maness; one brother, Bob Davenport and wife Ella of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Davenport will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at 2:00 P.M. at the Frost Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Military Honors provided by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, May 21, 2013, from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
Pallbearers will be Josh Morgan, Donnie Davenport, Joey Davenport, Darrell Warren, Jeremy Casey, and Shane Casey. Friends and neighbors will serve as honorary pallbearers.
