Bernard Lyman Cheney
Bernard Lyman Cheney died April 19, 2012 at his Machias home after a brief illness. He was born in Lubec May 4, 1923 the son of Reginald Merideth and Margaret (Yorke) Cheney. He graduated from Lubec High School and immediately volunteered for the paratroopers. He served with distinction through numerous battles in WWII including the Battle of the Bulge. Bernard concluded his military service as a sergeant occupying Berlin after the war was completed. Upon returning to Down East Maine Bernard served in the Maine State Police for seven years and then worked for the General Adjustment Bureau for the remainder of his career as an insurance adjuster. He enjoyed his long retirement and spent it working in his garden, spending time with his family and friends and occasionally doing boat surveys.
Bernard was predeceased by his wife ;Virginia Schoppee Cheney; and his only child Beverly Cheney Edwards. He is survived by his three grandsons – Benjamin, Matthew, and Peter Edwards; sister Pearl Cheney Choquette; son-in-law Dr. John A. Edwards, and John’s brother Larry P. Edwards; sister-in-law Rebecca Schoppee Carlson and family; the Corey family from Colorado; Jeanine Sullivan of Portland; and many more devoted friends and family. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the many professionals at Dr. David Rioux’s medical office and at the CHCS Hospice.
There will be no visitation or services. A private committal will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions in his memory to the Virginia S.
