ROBERT CHESTER DAVENPORT, 85, a resident of Rickreall died Sunday, February 12, 2012 in Independence. He was born on December 25, 1926 the son of Clarence and Elsa Hildred Cline Davenport in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. During World War II he served in the Navy and was discharge as Seaman First Class. Through the help of family he became a “Pen Pal” to a nice young lady by the name of Gislinde Edeltraut Gnosa from Germany. They were married on June 6, 1956 in Hamburg, Germany. She had to wait six months for the immigration papers to come through before she could come to America. They made their home in Long Beach, California. He attended Drake College and received training in accounting. He worked as an insurance investigator for many years. When he retired from insurance he became a dairy farmer in Monitor, Oregon with Holstein cattle. They later sold that farm and moved to Rickreall where they raised calves. Bob and Gislinde both liked animals, traveling and wintering in Arizona.
He is survived by his wife Gislinde of Rickreall, sons Thomas Davenport of Portland and Richard Davenport of Brookings, a brother Howard of North Carolina and six grandchildren.
Private inurnment will be in the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. The Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center is handling the arrangements.
