A life-long resident of Grosse Pointe, Eileen Hickey King, 84, died peacefully at home Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011.
She was born Aug. 30, 1927, and graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grosse Pointe. She attended Georgetown Visitation for her freshman year of college, where she was class president, before transferring to and graduating from the University of Michigan. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi.
She taught first grade for one year in the Detroit Public School system before marrying John L. "Jack" King in 1950.
An avid golfer, tennis, player, skier and bridge player, Mrs. King also loved to travel. She was a long-standing member of the Junior League of Detroit, St. Paul on the Lake Altar Society, Sacred Heart Children of Mary and Bon Secours Assistance League. She also was a volunteer tutor for many years.
Mrs. King will be remembered as a loving wife and mother committed to community service. Her family said she was a woman of strong faith, a good friend and a lot of fun.
Mrs. King is survived by her husband of 60 years, Jack; children, Sara DeCarlo, John L. (Julie) King Jr., Molly (Aaron) Garland and Anne King; grandchildren, Nicholas P. (Sonja) DeCarlo, Mark (Amy) DeCarlo, Lisa (George) Apollonio, Katherine (Winai) Khanijoun, Peter Olenick, Michael Olenick, Megan Olenick, John L. King III and Lauren King and great-grandchildren, Nicholas DeCarlo, Stephen DeCarlo, Elizabeth Apollonio, Andrew Apollonio, Isabella DeCarlo, Olivia DeCarlo and Anastasia DeCarlo.
She also is survived by her brother, Joseph L. (Peggy) Hickey Jr. of Harbor Springs.
She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph L. and Sara Murphy Hickey; sister, Sara "Sally" Hickey O'Donnell and brother, Edward J. Hickey.
