Obituary:

FRANK V. OLIVER, JR.

Frank V. Oliver, Jr., 80, of Palatka passed

away Monday, October 25, 2010 at his home following an extended

illness. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida on December 12,

1929. Frank moved to Palatka at age two, and lived there most of

his life.

He was a graduate of the Tennessee Military

Institute in Sweetwater, Tennessee, and attended Duke University and

the University of Florida. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in the

Signal Corp during the Korean War.

After his father’s retirement, he assumed the

presidency of Sun State Marine. An astute businessman, he increased

the number of tugs and barges that were so often seen on the river

on their way to Sanford and Georgia Pacific. He built ships and

drydocks, and contracted with the Coast Guard for repairs to their

vessels.

He began Riverline, Inc., after his retirement

from Sun State, and created Gator Landing in East Palatka.

He was a patriot, an outdoorsman and river man,

a hunter and tournament game fisherman.

He was a lifetime avid Gator fan, a Bull Gator,

a Distinguished Director of the Board of Gator Boosters, and a great

supporter of the Putnam County Gator Club.

Frank had many charitable interests, including

Rodeheaver Boys Ranch, The Salvation Army, Toys for Tots, the Putnam

County Humane Society, and others that he quietly supported.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Joyce,

a son, Mark Oliver of Key Largo, two sisters, Janet Oliver of

Crescent Beach and New York City, and Vivian McLendon (Dr. Robert

McLendon) of East Palatka, a nephew, Matt McLendon of Sarasota, his

wonderful secretary and friend, Patricia Mullis, and his friend and

assistant of many years, Ricky Gurthie.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank

V. Oliver, Sr., and his mother, Evelyn H. Oliver.

Services celebrating Frank’s life will be at

3:00 PM Thursday, October 28, 2010 at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home

in Palatka. The U.S. Army will be conducting military honors.

Private entombment will be at a later date at WestView Cemetery in

Palatka. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the

funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to

Rodeheaver Boy’s Ranch, 380 Boy’s Ranch Road, Palatka, FL 32177,

the Putnam County Humane Society, P.O. Box 188, Hollister, FL 32147,
