– Joseph V. Sargent, Sr., age 88 years, husband of Veronica M. (McParland) Sargent, died on Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Lahey Clinic in Burlington. Lifelong resident of Hamilton, he was son of the late Thomas A. and Julia (Burke) Sargent.
Mr. Sargent was a decorated soldier for the U.S. Army during World War II, including the Bronze Star, Good Conduct, WWII Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award, and Honorable Service. He attended General Motor Training School in Dedham and began his career as a Service Technician and Mechanic for Colonial Cadillac. Joseph later owned and operated Community Garage in Hamilton, and served as Town Mechanic for the Town of Hamilton. He was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Sargent enjoyed hunting and became well known in Field Trial Beagling, as the trainer of many champion dogs. He was a lifetime member of Spacetown Beagle Club of Raymond, NH and Merrimack Valley Beagle Club of Newbury. Joseph was a devoted father and enjoyed bringing his family camping.
Surviving him in addition to his wife are his children, Joseph V. Sargent, Jr. of Hamilton, Catherine J. Sargent of Hamilton, Veronica “Ronnie” M. Sargent of Newbury, and Elizabeth S. Wright and her husband Steven of Hooksett, NH; his grandchildren, Joseph V. Newell, Thomas J. Sargent, Jonathan D. Wright, Joseph A. Sargent; his great-grandchildren, Julia Sargent, Sarah Edsall, Page Sargent, and George Russo; a special friend, Michelle Gendron; his many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was also brother of the late, Steven J., Thomas, Francis, Mary, and Virginia Sargent; and grandfather of the late Robert J. Sargent.
A Funeral Mass will be held at the Church of St. Paul, 50 Union Street, Hamilton, on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
