Howard J. Mentink, 86, a resident of Gables on the Pond in Random Lake for the past two years and formerly of the Town of Lima, died Thursday morning, January 10, 2008 at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center with his family at his side. Howard was born on January 25, 1921 in the Town of Lima, the son of the late Alva and Minnie (Buehler) Mentink. He graduated from Waldo High School in 1938. On July 16, 1943, Howard married the late Ruth M. Harrison in Waldo. She preceded him in death on July 31, 2000. Howard was a lifelong dairy farmer in the Town of Lima until his retirement in 1980. His birthplace has been recognized as a Century Farm and is still in the family today following 123 years of continued ownership. Howard was a lifelong member of Hingham Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon and treasurer. He was active in the Sheboygan County Farm Bureau, Sheboygan County Holstein Breeders Assoc., Sheboygan County Fair Assoc Dairy Superintendent, FS Co-op in Waldo, and was a leader for the Waldo Fireflies and Sheboygan County 4-H Clubs for many years. Previously he served on the school boards for Banner School and the Sheboygan Falls School District. He served as a board member for the CESA 7 & 10. Howard and his wife belonged to the Coachman Group and traveled to 48 of the United States and Europe. He also enjoyed woodworking, gardening, needlepoint, card playing and baseball. Survivors include one daughter, Janice (Gary) Hesselink of Hingham; two sons, Gerry Mentink and Joel (Brenda) Mentink, both of Waldo; five grandchildren, Kate (John) Liebelt, Rebecca, Kathleen, Jason, and Jolene Mentink; two great grandchildren, Amber and Jessy Liebelt; a sister, Delores Martin of Hazel Green; and two sisters-in-law, Grace OReilly, and Shirley Mentink, both of Waldo. Howard is also survived by Mary, Lynette, Janelle and Wendy Hilbelink of Sheboygan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Glenn Hilbelink; one grandson, Jimmy Hilbelink; and one brother, Willard Mentink. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. at the Hingham Reformed Church, with the Rev. Steven J. Bakker, pastor, officiating. A family service will precede at 2:15 pm in the choir room. Burial will take place at Hingham Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Saturday, from Noon until the time of services at 2:30 p.m. A memorial fund will be established in his name for Hingham Reformed Church.
