BETTY RIGGS, 96, was born January 9, 1914 in Bandon, Oregon the third of seven children born to Roy B. and Grace Miller Holman and passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 in Dallas. She was raised and attended school in Grand Ronde, Sheridan and Dallas.
Betty married Virgil Riggs in 1932. Living in Black Rock, Oregon from 1936 until 1958. They were the last family to leave Black Rock after Willamette Valley Lumber Company closed its operations there. After Virgils death in 1986, Betty moved to Monmouth and then back to Meadow Creek Village in Dallas, where she resided until a back injury forced her into assisted living in 2007.
Bettys life revolved around her family. The mother of three daughters, she loved sewing for them and later her grandchildren and was an accomplished seamstress. She also enjoyed cooking, baking and canning and was a voracious reader until glaucoma and macular degeneration caused diminished sight. Her favorite activity was gardening. She raised much of her food and spent endless hours tending her beloved iris garden.
She was preceded in death by husband Virgil in 1986, daughter Beverly Stiffler in 2002 and by all six of her siblings. Survivors include daughters Lucille (Duane) Dunaway of Dallas and Barbara (Larry) Radie of Sweet Home; grandchildren Natalie (Vernon) Bathke and Gordon (April) Dunaway of Dallas, Ed (Barbara) Radie of California and David(Debbie) Radie of Boardman; Cathy (Les) Gould of Salem, Terry (Chris) Halleman of Eugene and Robert (Cheryl) Halleman of Clackamas; and numerous great and great great grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to John and Marilyn McAllaster for their loving care and to Odyssey Hospice.
A private graveside service was held in the Dallas Cemetery under the direction of the Bollman Funeral Home.
