Ruth M. Saunders

Ruth M. Saunders, 88, of Sublimity, formerly of Dallas, died April 27. She was born in Gillette, Wyo., to William W. and Peachie E. Keyser.
She was raised in Gillette and graduated from high school there. She continued her education at Laramie Normal School in Wyoming and became a teacher. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in the Gillette area.
Ruth married Milford F. Saunders Jan. 1, 1940, in Broadus, Mont. They lived on a family farm in Gillette for 14 years before moving to Sheridan, Wyo., where they lived for 17 years. They lived in Missoula and Lewistown, Mont., before coming to Oregon in August 1979. While in Lewistown she worked for the Montana Institute of the Bible, managing the snack shop and bookstore.
She was active in her churches, the Salt Creek Baptist Church in Dallas and the Salem Evangelical Church.
She took oil painting classes at age 65 and discovered she had a natural ability to create beauty on canvas. She enjoyed doing handwork in crocheting and embroidery and spending time with her family and at activities at Marion Estates.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Milford, in 1994; brothers, Willet and Ernest Keyser; sisters, Zina Jacobsen and Sadie Sutherland; and grandson, Brandon Burnell.
Survivors include her sons, Allen (Sandra) Saunders of Billings, Mont., and Dan (Debbie) Saunders of Gillette; daughter, Nancy (Larry) Barnes of Stayton; nine grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Viewing is 9 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, May 2 at Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center. Memorial service is 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 2 at Salem Evangelical Church and interment will be in Salt Creek Cemetery.
