Obituary:

Grant "G.G." Talbott III, 60, of 2221 Sheffield Court died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born in Owensboro on Sept. 21, 1946, to the late Grant G. Talbott Jr. and Addie C. Talbott. He served for 30 years as a teacher and guidance counselor for the Owensboro City School System and for the past 11 years as a counselor for Owensboro Community and Technical College.

During his many years in education, G.G. touched the lives of many as a mentor, confidante and friend. He was a graduate of Owensboro High School and received a baseball scholarship from Florida A&M, where he earned his bachelor's degree and was a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity. He earned his Master's degree from Western Kentucky University.

During his tenure at Owensboro High School, he served as girls' basketball coach where he lead his teams to five region titles while compiling a 152-21 record from 1975 to 1981. Based on these accomplishments, he will be inducted into the 2008 KHSAA Hall of Fame. He served on the Owensboro Municipal Utilities Commission, Owensboro Medical Health System Foundation for Health, KHSAA Board of Control, Daviess County Public Library Board, Western Kentucky University Advisory Board in Owensboro and the Owensboro Community College Advisory Board. He recently received the Leitha Buck and Anna L. Martin Memorial Award for Outstanding Citizenship from the Owensboro Black Expo.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Antoinette "Toni"; two sons, Grant G. "Grangee" Talbott IV of Los Angeles and Shaun Lamar Talbott (Christa) of New Orleans; two grandchildren, Nia and Imani; a brother, James Dartez Talbott (Cheryl) of Sanderville, Ga.; three nephews, Preston III, Cameron and Kendric; and four nieces, Allysen, Keshia, Shanice and Brittany.

Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fourth Street Baptist Church in Owensboro. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Rosehill-Elmwood Cemetery in Owensboro. McFarland Funeral Home in Owensboro is in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the H.L.
