WALTERBORO " Mr. Nelson Durant Gatch, 84, of 10592 Jefferies Highway, Walterboro, died Thursday morning, September 25, 2008, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro under the care of Winyah Hospice.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 oclock Sunday afternoon, September 28, 2008, from Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 7345 Jefferies Highway, Walterboro with The Reverend James Pedigo officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Navy.
Mr. Gatch was born March 1, 1924, in Ridgeland and was a son of the late John Edward Gatch and the late Carrie Elizabeth Beach Gatch. He served his country in the Untied States Navy from September of 1942 until January of 1946, where he saw action during World War II and achieved the rank of Gunners Mate 3rd Class. He then worked and retired form the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he was an electrician. He was awarded such honors by The Commander of the Charleston Naval Shipyard as: The Superior Achievement Award of Outstanding Job Performance, Certificate of Recognition for Personal Responsibility and Daily Effort Award, Certificate of Merit, which was awarded for exhibiting an unusual degree of skill and excellence through the United States Naval Training School; and he also cited for superior achievement on two separate occasions. He was a former member of Canaan Baptist Church at Canadys where he served on the Deacon Board, and was currently a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Walterboro. Nelson will be remembered as a devoted husband and a loving father; and was thought of by many that there was not a better man in the world. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and will be remembered by all for his sense of humor.
Surviving are: his wife of sixty years, Mrs. Eloise Browning Gatch; four sons, Nelson Durant Randy Gatch, Jr. and his wife Donna of Quincy, Florida, Terry Michael Gatch and his wife Jennifer of Walterboro, Glenn Arthur Gatch of Walterboro, and James Robert Bobby Gatch and his wife LuAnn of Savannah, Georgia; and a sister, Carmelita Gatch Swanson of Goose Creek. There are two grandchildren, David Gatch and Courtney Gatch.
