Robert Fritz Maier, MD, 77, of South Wellfleet, MA (formerly of Somers, CT) died peacefully at home in his sleep after a courageous two-year battle with cancer on July 8, 2010. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Bette (Broberg) of 46 years, his four children, Cheryl and her husband John Walsh, Valerie and her husband Aaron Bowman, Robert Maier and his wife Margaret, Heidi and her husband Steven Wall, along with eight wonderful grandchildren.
Dr. Maier was a graduate of Harvard University and Tufts Medical School. He interned at Boston City Hospital and served his surgical residency at Springfield Hospital, followed by a one-year residency in advanced cancer surgery at Western Massachusetts Hospital.
In 1965, Dr. Maier moved his family to Somers, CT, where he established a private practice in general surgery and family medicine. Dr. Maier served 44 years at Johnson Memorial Hospital, Stafford, CT, where he held various positions in the department of surgery. He was a member of the Tolland County Medical Association. He was also a devoted member and past president of the Somers Rotary Club and recipient of the distinguished Paul Harris Fellowship Award for dedicated community service. Dr. Maier retired from active practice in 2003 yet remained as an assistant surgeon at his beloved Johnson Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Maier will be remembered for his love of nature and wonderful sense of humor!
The Maier family will receive relatives and friends at the Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main St, Rt. 190, Somers, CT on Thursday, July 15th from 4-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, 30 North St., Enfield, CT on Friday, July 16th at 10 a.m. followed by a burial at Somers West Cemetery, Main St, Somers, CT.
